ABOUT DR. LEE

Dr. Lillian Lee - Opthamologist in Poway, CA

Dr. Lillian Lee is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and provides comprehensive eye care with specialization in cataract and glaucoma consultation and surgery. 

She was born and raised in San Diego, California.  After graduating as the Valedictorian of her class at Mission Bay High School, she then went on to graduate with Distinction at Stanford University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering.  She then moved to San Francisco where she completed medical school and ophthalmology residency training at the University of California in San Francisco.  Deciding to pursue further studies, she then completed the Glaucoma Fellowship at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary of Harvard Medical School.  After spending two years studying and working in the New England area, she decided to move back home to sunny San Diego in 2003. Proud Sponsor of The Tour de Poway

From 2003 to 2008, she was providing comprehensive eye care for patients in the Oceanside/Vista area.  In 2008, Dr. Herbst selected her to take over his practice and provide ongoing care for his patients in Poway.  In addition to comprehensive eye care and cataract surgery, she can also provide subspecialty care in glaucoma treatment and surgery.  Her commitment is to provide the highest quality eye care with a personal approach for each patient. 

She has been published several times in peer-reviewed journals for her research in both clinical and basic science areas.  To learn more about her research interests, please contact our office in Poway.

Dr. Lee has a variety of interests outside the office, including cycling, wine-tasting, and performing charity work in third world countries.  See below for more information on some of the charity work she has done in Guatemala.

The Mission To Guatemala

In 1996, the Diocese of Helena, Montana established a permanent Mission in the town of Santo Tomas la Union, in the Western Highlands of Guatemala.  The clinic at the mission, called Clinica Maxena, was built in order to provide medical, dental, and optical assistance to the people of this region. 

This is a very remote area of the country. The nearest government hospital is located in the city of Mazatenango, which is roughly 2 hours away by car, on winding mountainous roads.

Since 1996, a team of ophthalmologists from the United States has journeyed to the Mission in order to provide eye care to this remote area of the country.  The team travels to this area twice per year for a one week period, usually in February and then again in September.  Since there are no ophthalmologists practicing regularly in this area of the country, these people would not otherwise have access to ophthalmic care and surgery.  An eye clinic is set up to diagnose and treat common...
